Course of the Month – Lincoln Park in Charlotte, MI
January 10, 2011
January 2011 Course of the Month
Lincoln Park
Charlotte, MI USA
By Mike Kemp

My name is Mike Kemp and I am choosing to write about my home course, Lincoln Park located in Charlotte, MI. Myself and many other members of our local club the Charlotte Disc Golf Association have helped to build a great course for the disc golfer of every level. Yes, this course may not be suitable for a Pro Worlds event it still offers much challenge in many aspects of the growing sport. Our course is centrally located in MId-Michigan offering courses within 30 minutes in every direction. The front nine of our course is short but technical, appealing to players of multiple levels. While our back twelve holes open upon and offers some more distance for the longer driving players. The front nine of our course has become very appealing for players new to the sport of disc golf, and has really helped to grow the awarness of the sport, as a whole, in our community. Where as the back twelve offers a variety of different shots from hyzers to anhyzers to thumbers oh my! Also offering some longer holes to get out and open up your drives a little more. Our entire course length is approximately 4,982 ft.

Lincoln Park was originally a nine hole course built and donated by the city of Charlotte and we had nothing to do with its layout. After a couple year we had built enough recognition for the course that the city elected to purchase nine more baskets for our course and allowed us, the players, to decide the layout for the original back nine. Since that time we have held many tournaments and events such as a summer league that is in it’s second year with over 50 active players. We also have purchased three baskets in the last year and built our course into a 21 hole course with the hopes of adding 3 more holes by the end of this year. Over the last year and a half we have held many successful events at our course and attracted competitors as far south as Ft. Wayne, IN. Though our course may not be built for the largest disc golf tournaments in the world it is built with the most basic disc golfer in mind and the most advanced at the same time. If your ever in Michigan it is worth the time to stop and throw a round of 21. Located less than 5 minutes from I-69, Lincoln Park is a course worth taking the time to stop and play.
Thanks for taking the time to read about our course!

And the front runner for consideration is ‘Players Disc Golf Association’ which would keep the well known acronym in place.
To keep things democratic, they are polling fans for their opinion. Please take a quick minute of your day to visit the link below and fill out the short, 6 question, survey. Thanks, everyone!

PDGA to Focus on Grassroots Programs for 2011
December 19, 2010
The PDGA & its Board of Directors have met to discuss Disc Golf growth initiatives for 2011 and have decided to re-focus their efforts back to grassroots strategies. Below is a summary of 3 new planned programs for 2011 along with a link to the full article:

Details on the following three programs are currently being developed for implementation in 2011:
Course Growth Program – The PDGA, along with the support of participating course equipment manufacturers, will be launching a program to assist in the funding of new disc golf courses. This incentive funding program will be limited to areas and communities that do not currently have a disc golf course with the goal being to create new disc golf communities around the world, which will result in an increase in the number of players and tournaments.
Educational Program – The PDGA will be launching a program to assist in the funding of educational programs and to develop better educational tools and materials which will aid in teaching disc golf to kids, senior citizens, and other interested groups.
School League Program – A program to encourage and foster the growth of school leagues and competitions will be developed and will include a new low cost sanctioning tier which will provide these competitions with insurance coverage required by school districts.

November Course of the Month – Deer Lick Park in Douglasville, GA
November 27, 2010
Our November course of the month is appropriate because it’s also the course featured in Webisode #2 which we just published to YouTube yesterday (see above for the video). Read about this ‘Diamond in the Rough’ below and be sure to check out our video, preferable with the 720p setting turned on!

‘Diamond In The Rough’
aka Deer Lick Disc Golf Park
by Merrit Schatz
The course is located in a well-maintained park that also contains a pond, a walking track, putt-putt course and dog park to add to the surroundings. Deer Lick Disc Golf started as a small 9-hole course that was fun but short. When Douglas County acquired the property just west of the original park, several Disc golfers in the area saw the potential for an extremely varied course.
This course offers different challenges; is it overly long? Is it overly technical? I say no on both counts. However the challenges still persist; other courses often feel too similar from one hole to the next because they are all about the same length. At Deer Lick, the front nine feels very different from the back. There are several holes that will reward you with a par or punish you with a five.

Hole #4 at Deer Lick
There are two holes that drive this home. Hole 4 has to be the signature hole on the front nine. It is an extremely scenic shot off of a hillside from a nicely created natural tee box. The drive gives you two options. The first is to shoot it into an opening in the woods to a safe landing spot. The second more interesting line is to shoot over the winding creek that enters the woods straight onto the green which is surrounded by the creek on 3 sides.
On the back nine, several holes come to mind as challenging, but the 11th is brutal, not an overly long hole but narrow and in the shape of an “S”. This hole has but one path to take which is right down the middle – stay out of the trees to either the right or left and you’ll leave happy with a par or bounce around in the woods and walk away mumbling under your breath.
Ask any poet and they’ll say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder“. Ask any local Disc Golfers and they’ll tell you, “she may be rough but she’s our diamond” on the west side of Atlanta.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What happens if I lose my first match?
Regionals – You play the second round against someone else that lost their first match.
Finals – Every competitor plays at least five matches in the finals. If you lose, you go from the A Pool to the B Pool. As long as you end up with a winning record (3-2 or better), you’ll cash. One bad round won’t spoil your weekend at the Player’s Cup!
Q. What is this?
We are taking the NCAA March Madness and applying the same concept to disc golf. The top players in the world will face off in a mano-a-mano matchplay tournament.
Q. How can I get in?
There are three ways to get into the 64 player match play tournament.
The top 32 ranked players in the world have a spot reserved.
Three qualifiers from each of the eight Regionals will make the finals.
The TDs of the Regionals will get an invite as a thank-you for running Regionals.
Q.What time & day does Regional registration open?
Registration for the Regional Qualifiers will be done through this site.
Registration will begin on August 17th at noon EST and will be done on a first come, first served status. If a region fills, a wait list will be formed.
Q. Can I come and watch?
Absolutely! We plan on charging $5 per car to get into the course. Your parking ticket can be used as a $5 coupon at the Flymart on Saturday night or at the concession stand on Saturday or Sunday.
Q. What is Matchplay?
Wikipedia explains it very well. Basically, it is a head to head format where each hole is worth one point. Win the hole, get a point. Tie the hole, halve the point. Lost the hole, lose the point.
Q. Can I play in multiple regionals?
Yes. You do not need to live in a specific region to play in that areas Regionals.
Q. What is the payout?
Place
1st – $5,000
2nd – $2,500
3rd-4th – $1,250
5th-12th – $750
13th-20th – $500
21st-32nd – $300
Q. How can I sponsor?
We will have a very limited number of fund-raiser discs available. There are also multiple Sponsorship Levels.
Contact Mike Barnett or Steven Dodge to reserve your spot.
Q. What about strength of regions?
While it is true that all regions are not created equally, for the first year, we would hate to penalize a region based on how we think they would perform. Therefore, in 2010, all regions will get three qualifiers plus their Regional TD.
In 2011, the two weakest regions (as determined by won-loss record of their Regional Qualifiers and Regional TD at the Finals), will lose one qualifier spot and the two strongest regions will gain one qualifier spot.
Q. Will there be a play in event in case someone does not show?
Yes. There will be a final chance to get into the tourney on Thursday the 19th. It will cost $10 to play and your entry fee receipt will be a $10 coupon to the Flymart on Saturday night.
If someone does not show up for their match on Friday, the top player from the play in event will take the missing player’s spot.
New Band Station AM ‘Closes In’ on Disc Golf Videos
November 10, 2010

As we make final preparations to push our 2nd Webisode live, we wanted to promote another band that’s supplying music to the cause. Station AM is a new group out of Atlanta headed by singer/songwriter Drew Price, who also happens to be the guy behind AceRunners.com*. Right now, they are in the middle of recording their first album that combines a variety of influences such as 90‘s alternative and indie rock with songwriting nods to bands such as Radiohead, Death Cab for Cutie, Stone Temple Pilots and more. Their song ‘Closing In’ is played during the opening sequence to each of the Webisodes.
Below are some videos (including webisode #1) that feature new music by Station AM. Like them on Facebook to stay in the loop as they complete new songs. If you missed our story on Washington DC band The Roofwalkers, another band featured in the webisodes, click here to read it.

October Course of the Month – Cedar Falls, Iowa
October 17, 2010

If you are a fan of the course of the month feature on our site and you or someone you know would like to get an article published then click here for details. It’s easy, free & fun!
Tourist Park
Cedar Falls, Iowa
By Jay Alexandres
Tourist Park in Cedar Falls is an 18-hole course. This park is the 3rd oldest course in the world and was established in 1978 when the city won the baskets in a raffle. Tourist was the course that both Jay and Des Reading picked up the game at when they were in college at UNI.
Since it is such a old course, it is very short. With the longest hole being 280 feet long. Tourist park is a great course for new players just learning the game, or pros wanting to work on their short game. With 4 holes shorter than 150 feet, it gives you a good chance at having a few ace runs.
