United States Disc Golf Championship News Release from Innova
August 31, 2010
USDGC News Release
This year marks the 12th anniversary of the United States Disc Golf Championship (USDGC). Since its inception in 1999, the USDGC has grown into one of disc golf’s premier championship events. Innova Disc Golf, in association with the event’s many volunteers, sponsors, USDGC Partners, Winthrop University, and the Professional Disc Golf Association, is extremely proud to have been such an integral part of our game’s history.
Innova considers it a privilege to be in a leadership position. We have seen disc golf, and our business, grow and change tremendously over nearly three decades. The disc golf market is continually expanding and Innova is more committed than ever to improving our service to this incredibly diverse community of players.
In recognition of the growth of disc golf around the globe, we have decided to move the USDGC to a biennial schedule. Effective immediately, the USDGC will alternate years with Europe’s major event – The European Open. The USDGC will be held in even numbered years and the European Open in odd numbered years. This will enable better global promotion of professional disc golf, as well as afford us an opportunity to serve another important segment of the disc golf population.
Amateur and recreational golfers represent the fastest growing portion of the disc golf community. With these players in mind, a new event will visit the famous grounds at Winthrop University in 2011. Details will be forthcoming, but two of the guiding principles will be: Amateurism and Fun Competition in a Professional Setting at Winthrop. Despite these changes our mission remains the same; to live disc golf and to enable others to discover such a wonderful lifetime sport.
We are excited about the future of disc golf, more so than ever before. Opportunity for the game’s advancement abounds. We are confident that this new schedule will allow the USDGC to sustain its tradition of excellence, while building an even better fan base for the game’s elite. One thing you can count on this fall is that Innova and the USDGC family are steadily preparing for our greatest tournament experience to date. We look forward to October, and to seeing you here.
Warmest regards,
Innova Disc Golf
AceRunners Team Makes Presence Known at Hotlanta Tournament
August 30, 2010
This past weekend, one of the bigger tournaments of the year in Atlanta was played, called Hotlanta. It is the 14th year this B-tier tournament has been held and this time it took place on two of our favorite courses – Flyboy Aviation and Perkerson Park. Both courses are very unique.
You may already know about the very popular private course, Flyboy Aviation, from reading our first Course of the Month entry by course owner, Kelly Leggette. Perkerson Park is a temporary course on its way to becoming permanent in Atlanta and we have shot a lot of our tutorials there. Here is a video of highlights we put together over a year ago on Perkerson:
We bring this tournament up, not just to bring up our favorite courses but also to give some props to 2 of AceRunners members – Justin Drage and Chris Millay. Both played in the Open Divisions, both were sporting the new AceRunners Dri-Fit shirts and both finished very well. Justin came in 2nd, pulling in over $500 big ones and Chris finished in 7th. Great job, guys!
This may be further evidence that our shirts have a little something special in them. On that note, there are 5 days left to get a free shirt for sending in a course of the month entry. Here are the details.
Thanks for listening and congrats again, guys!

Support The Future of Disc Golf – Analyzing the Current PDGA Growth Rate
August 25, 2010
Let’s dive in a little bit on what this percentage might mean…
- When looking for growth/acquisition you tend to want the percentages to mature based on short and long term goals so that the percentage of newbies (amateurs in this example) is very high for the beginning stages but eventually that should die down to a more balanced distribution
- 5-10 years ago a rate of 75% for amateurs would probably be a good thing for the PDGA, but now – as Disc Golf is getting much more popular, our guess is that it would be healthier to see the rate around 50% – 60%
- A healthy balance between the growth and retention rate is needed to sustain the growth of Disc Golf
- In other words, we need a core group of players staying in the game and continuing to play tournaments year after year (i.e. continuing to invest time and money in the growth of the sport)
As I write this editorial look at the article the PDGA just published I need to admit I am just as guilty. My current PDGA membership is inactive and has been for some time – something I plan to fix just after posting. To be fair, I took a year off due to a bad injury but this article was a kick-in-the butt reminder that we all need to do our part to help Disc Golf reach it’s potential. The PDGA surely pulls their weight.
Some final words from the PDGA:
Members = Growth = Media Attraction
Membership Bonus: Anyone who joins OR renews after October 1st will be extended through 2011. Spread the word!
Thanks for checking in and feel free to email any thoughts,

2010 Players Cup Championship – Disc Golf’s March Madness is Reborn
August 23, 2010
This November, 64 Disc Golf Players will play 6 rounds with a final prize of $5,000. Regional qualifiers begin next week and will allow the top 32 regional qualifiers to face off against the top 32 ranked players in match play action in Ocala, Florida.
The tournament is being sponsored by Vibram Disc Golf and hosted by Sun King Sports. At this time we are unsure if there are plans to stream the action again but considering Vibram’s affiliation we’d like to think it’s a possibility. If that’s the case, AceRunners.com will surely provide the live feed again on our site.
